New appeal to help stop the criminal use of e-bikes, scooters and motorbikes across Merseyside

Boys on e-motorbikes

We've launched a campaign across Merseyside to appeal for information about the increasing use of e-bikes, electric motorbikes (e-motorbikes) and e-scooters by criminals who move around the region and distribute drugs and weapons, and take part in violent crime and thefts.

E-bikes are being stolen, sometimes using knives and violence, to be used in crime, and for their sell-on value. They are often driven dangerously with little thought for the safety of the public or themselves. The bikes and scooters are also used as transport for stealing mobile phones and handbags from unaware or distracted pedestrians.

The speeds that the bikes can travel and the ease with which they can manoeuvre in built up areas has made them a popular mode of transport, particularly for young men who are involved in crime.

Pedal e-bike

The term ‘e-bike’ is a generic term used to describe all two-wheeled electric vehicles. Some e-bikes are legal to use on a road or other public places just like a standard pedal cycle. These legal e-bikes must conform to the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) regulations.

Under current UK law, private e-scooters cannot be ridden on public highways or in public spaces. They are only legal to use on private land with the landowner’s permission. Rental e-scooters are available in some areas, and these can be legally used on public roads and certain cycle lanes – but only if you follow the Highway Code and road traffic laws.

As an independent charity, we're looking to increase the amount of community information given anoymously to us on their criminal use, to tackle serious and organised crime, and make our streets safer.

Here are some specifics that could be especially useful:

  • The location of where the bikes are stored
  • Names etc. of those stealing e-bikes and/or selling them on
  • Registration numbers of vans used to transport the stolen bikes and scooters
  • Details of the individuals who are using e-bikes/scooters to transport drugs and weapons or carrying out attacks across Merseyside

Do you have information? Tell us what you know, 100% anonymously - guaranteed.

Give information anoymously

Over the last 12 months Crimestoppers has received a record number of reports from the public in Merseyside, which has led to arrests, seizures of weapons and drugs, and vulnerable people being safeguarded.

Every day, information given to Crimestoppers and passed on to law enforcement makes a difference.

“The theft and rise in the use of e-bikes and scooters by criminals is very concerning. They are normally ridden by young men who often have a total disregard for the safety of others. Sadly, we have seen some serious collisions as a result.

“We need the public’s help to stop these bikes being used to transport drugs, guns and knives, ride-by thefts and robberies, and to stop the theft of these expensive bikes. They are the getaway transport to other crimes.

“Our charity ensures you stay 100% anonymous. You will never be asked for any of your personal details. Call freephone 0800 555 111 at any time or complete a secure online form here on our website.

“We understand that for many it takes a lot of courage to go online or pick up the phone to pass on what you know. However, by taking that step with Crimestoppers, you are making your community safer for you and your family.”

Gary Murray, Crimestoppers' North West Regional Manager
