Keeping homes safe in Leicestershire
We're supporting the people of Leicester by encouraging everyone to cut the chance of becoming a victim of so-called acquisitive crime.
As an independent charity, we want to raise awareness of the issue of burglary in Leicester, and we want to encourage people to take some simple steps to help protect themselves, their homes and their property from theft, robbery, and burglary.
Theft is when something is stolen, while robbery is when force is used, or the victim believes force will be used. Burglary applies to when a property is entered in order to steal.
Across the county of Leicestershire, the number of burglaries rose by around 10% for the year to June compared to 12 months previously. This contrasts sharply with areas such as Oadby & Wigston, which saw a rise of nearly 18% to June this year. This is a lower increase than previously, when Oadby & Wigston had been nationally recognised as having the highest increase of residential burglary offences compared to any other area in the country, but is still a cause for concern.
We want to highlight that the risk of burglaries is ever-present and that, even if you’re only going out for a few minutes, it’s best to check that all doors and windows are properly closed and locked.
“Behind terms like robbery and burglary lies financial hardship, shock, a loss of essential or sentimental items, along with fear and often injury. An item of sentimental value can never be replaced. Our charity, which is independent of the police, believes that everybody has a right to feel safe everywhere, especially in their home, and that our belongings are secure.
“We're reminding everyone across Leicester that they can cut the chance of theft, robbery and burglary - and we're directly appealing to the public: if you know of anybody involved in theft, robbery or burglary, our charity is here to take information from you 100% anonymously. We have no way of knowing who you are. We will pass what you tell us to the police, who will investigate things further without you having any comeback.”
