Human Trafficking - Read The Signs

Human trafficking is an issue that is moving more into the public consciousness, with an increasing number of both currently operating and developing initiatives to target offenders at national and local levels.

Working alongside Sussex Police and other organisations at Gatwick Airport, Sussex Crimestoppers held an awareness day on Friday 28th March at the Gatwick Hilton Hotel, where after an initial formal launch presentation, approximately 20 local and national organisations showcased their work, illustrating tell-tale signs and some of the outcomes of human trafficking in a drop-in 'market stall' arena.

Staff working in the transport, security and hotel sectors were the primary target audience, but invitations were also extended to other interested parties.

Speakeasy Spectacular Fundraising Dinner

On Friday 22nd November, the Ballroom at the Brighton Grand Hotel was transported back in time and became a 1920s speakeasy for Sussex Crimestoppers main annual fundraising event. Guests passed through security checks for access to the Library Pietro James, where the password gave access through a secret door into the Fat Slam Bar and Bootlegger ballroom for an evening of glitz, glamour, fine food and entertainment.  As the final calculations are being worked out it would appear that the evening has been a great success in raising funds to help fight crime in Sussex.

After the event East Sussex High Sherrif, Graham Peters DL, commented:

"Thank you so much for such a great evening at the Crimestoppers Speakeasy yesterday evening and particular thanks to you and your team for making our late arrival so utterly painless - we managed all three courses!

We also much enjoyed meeting some new friends as well as old.

Judging from the raffle and auction, the evening will be a resounding success financially - it certainly was socially.

All good wishes - I look forward to meeting again."

Domestic Violence Campaign Launch, kindly sponsored by Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club and held at at the Amex Stadium in Brighton. Addressing a frequently hidden crime, which remains a concern to society. The keynote launch speaker was Penny Beale, a mother who suffered the awful experience of losing her own daughter to domestic violence. Penny made a short film of her traumatic experience, entitled 'Break the Silence' and this provided a very emotional focus to the purpose of the event. Sussex Crimestoppers produced a Domestic Violence Storyboard as part of our campaign launch.
