Burglaries in Cumbria: Tell us 5 things we’re looking for
Our charity is calling on anyone who knows about those involved in burglaries, selling stolen goods or targeting the vulnerable to contact us anonymously.
Cumbria is one of the safest places to live in England, however, burglaries in towns and rural areas do occur. It is not a victimless crime. It’s incredibly traumatic to lose valuables and important personal items from your home – and the emotional shock of having your property invaded can also be deeply upsetting.
Some simple measures that will keep your home more secure include: keeping your house and garage doors locked; fitting secure locks to your shed and if you are storing expensive bikes to keep them locked and securing them to the floor; fitting window locks; putting indoor lights on a timer; and fitting external lights on a timer or sensor or a video doorbell.
In rural areas it is particularly important to ensure that your home, out buildings and machinery are locked, that cameras and light sensors are fitted and suspicious vehicles and individuals are reported to the police.
Burglary: 5 things to spot and speak up about
The public in Cumbria can also help keep their homes and community safer by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously if they:
- Know the name of anyone involved in burglaries
- Are aware of planned break ins; where and when
- Have info about gangs who target vulnerable victims
- Know who is selling stolen goods and where
- Have details about people stealing car keys from homes and then their cars
“When you contact our charity, personal details are never asked for or stored, thanks to our promise of total anonymity. We are also completely independent of the police.
“The home should be a place where you feel safe and secure, but unfortunately for some this spring, it will be a place that has been violated and they feel fearful and traumatized.
“I would encourage everyone to take some simple precautions to make their home more secure and encourage neighbours to look out for one another. Please help keep your and your neighbours’ homes safe by reporting what you know to Crimestoppers: it’s fast, simple, anonymous and the information can help stop criminals ruining your spring and summer.”
Gary Murray, Crimestoppers North West Regional Manager
