We appeal for tip-offs to help ‘put the brakes’ on drink & drug driving
With the festive season upon us, we warn that drink and drug drivers are putting people at risk and that anonymous information our charity receives could help save lives.
From January to September this year, we received over 34,000 reports about people who regularly drive while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. This is a rise of nearly 25 per cent compared to the year before. During peak times, our charity receives over 100 anonymous drink and drug driving reports each day.
Crimestoppers – which is independent of the police – gives people a vital alternative to anonymously pass on what they know about crime. This means when you contact our charity, we never ask for or store your personal details. Whilst we work with the police by passing on the information we receive, we pride ourselves on our charity status.
Nearly half of drug driving offences are committed by a reoffender * and latest figures show that convictions for driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs have increased by 40% since 2014. **
Please note: When you contact our charity, computer IP addresses are never traced and no-one will ever know you contacted us. For telephone calls, there is no caller line display, no 1471 facility and calls have never been traced.
In an emergency always call 999.
“Those under the influence of drink or drugs are far more likely to cause a crash, sometimes with fatal consequences. Many of those drivers regret their behaviour, but by then it’s too late.
“You can help ‘put the brakes’ on regular drink and drug drivers by telling our charity what you know. Being able to give information anonymously with no comeback is so worthwhile as it helps tackle these kinds of dangerous and criminal behaviours.“Our charity is here for you 24/7, both online and on the phone by calling 0800 555 111. If you know of someone involved in drug or drink driving – maybe it’s a friend, neighbour, colleague or family member - it’s better to be safe than sorry. It can save lives and will help make our roads safer for everyone.”
