Communities encouraged to keep Cardiff safe by giving crime information anonymously
We have launched a campaign in Cardiff to highlight our charity’s unique service of guaranteeing anonymity to everyone who contacts us to pass on information about crime.
Although Cardiff is a safe place to live, we have seen a 25% increase in reports from people living in South Wales over a five year period. Crimestoppers offers an alternative when it comes to reporting crime and since the late 1980s when we started, we have always kept our guarantee of anonymity.
We are independent of the police and we know that speaking up about crime can be a worry, especially if it involves criminality that’s close to home. Information given 100% anonymously to Crimestoppers, or Fearless, the youth arm of our charity, can be crucial in helping to make communities safer. Our service breaks down barriers that prevent people from speaking up.
Information given anonymously is passed on to law enforcement and helps to save lives by stopping domestic abuse, preventing serious organised crime and supporting investigators to solve cases from murder, rape, child abuse and organised crime.
Information can be given 100% anonymously in over 150 different languages, 365 days of the year, 24/7, by calling the UK-based Contact Centre on freephone number 0800 555 111, or by completing a safe and secure anonymous online form or Fearless.org for young people.
Hayley Fry, Crimestoppers National Manager for Wales: “Crimestoppers and Fearless, our charity’s youth service, are here for people who, for whatever reason, feel unable to speak directly to the police. This may be because they fear retribution or because those involved are too close to home.
“People sometimes know something about a crime, or have a suspicion, whether that is they think a property nearby is being used as a cannabis farm, or they think a neighbour or friend is suffering from domestic abuse. Our charity wants everyone to know that we are here, and they can pass on their information to us and no one will ever know. We guarantee their 100% anonymity.
“Anyone can contact us online via our Crimestoppers untraceable online form or Fearless.org, our service for younger people. Alternatively, you can call our 24-hour UK Contact Centre on freephone 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers number will not show up on phone bills and we cannot trace computer IP addresses. We are not interested in who you are, just what you know.”
