International Most Wanted fugitive James Stevenson sentenced to 20 years

James Stevenson

International drug trafficker James ‘Jamie’ Stevenson, previously one of the UK’s Most Wanted fugitives, has been sentenced this month to 20 years in jail.

Stevenson, aged 59, is known as the “Iceman”. He masterminded a plot to smuggle almost a tonne of cocaine from Ecuador to Scotland in a cargo of bananas, which was seized by Border Force at Dover in September 2020.

The shipment, which was addressed to a Glasgow fruit merchant, contained 119 foil packages with 952 blocks of cocaine with an estimated street value of £76 million.

He was also central to a conspiracy to supply and produce around 28 million Etizolam “street valium” tablets, which were seized following a raid on a pill factory in Kent.

He was listed as Most Wanted in Spain at the launch of a campaign run by our charity with the National Crime Agency in January 2022. He was arrested just two weeks later while out jogging in the Netherlands and was returned to the UK to face justice.

Stevenson and his associates were caught by investigators from the National Crime Agency, Police Scotland and the Metropolitan Police.

Evidence from the encrypted communications platform EncroChat, where they discussed their plots, was used to bring them down.
