We launch new Northamptonshire domestic abuse campaign

New four-week #YouAreNotPowerless Crimestoppers campaign highlights that domestic abuse reports to Crimestoppers increased by 169% in Northamptonshire last year.

We've launched a new campaign in Northamptonshire, encouraging people to be aware of the signs of domestic abuse and to speak up about their suspicions 100% anonymously.

In Northamptonshire, during the first national lockdown in 2020, Crimestoppers saw a small increase in domestic abuse reports. However, the number of reports increased by 169% last year.

It is estimated that a typical victim endures up to 35 assaults before speaking up, and that can be for many different reasons; fear of losing their children; fear of losing their home; fear of not being believed; even thoughts that they are somehow to blame for the abuse. Bystanders – those in the know, whether that’s because they’ve heard or witnessed abusive behaviour, or because the victim has confided in them - can speak up straight away to help stop the abuse and get the victims the support they so desperately need.

Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold is supporting the Crimestoppers county-wide campaign, in the hope that this will encourage residents of Northamptonshire to speak out about domestic abuse.

The campaign is also highlighting the service VOICE and the Northamptonshire Domestic Abuse Service (NDAS).

“As seen with the rise in reports Crimestoppers has received from Northamptonshire over the past year, more and more people are willing to come forward, knowing that our charity will guarantee their anonymity and no one will ever know they contacted us. Their information, via Crimestoppers, helps law enforcement bring a halt to the abuse and violence in the home.

“At the independent charity Crimestoppers, a team of professionals working at the national Contact Centre anonymise all information received – to ensure the person giving the details can never be identified – before it is passed to police to investigate and safeguard. Whether it is a neighbour, friend, work colleague or relative, no one will ever know who provided the information.”
Steve Lingley, Domestic Abuse Lead for the Northamptonshire Crimestoppers Volunteer Committee

“Tackling domestic abuse is a key priority for me, which is why I am completely supportive of the work being carried out by Crimestoppers. I am committed to working with partners to ensure that victims and witnesses of domestic abuse have the confidence to speak out and know where to get the support they need. I am also focused on reducing the instances of domestic abuse through prevention and rehabilitative programmes, as well as bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“Nobody should feel unsafe in their own home and I am determined that campaigns such as this get the backing they need to reduce the harm caused by domestic violence and safeguard those people affected. Any action we can take to protect potential victims of domestic abuse is welcomed and will play a significant role in keeping the people of Northamptonshire safe.”
Stephen Mold, Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner
