Find out about the campaigns we at Crimestoppers run, nationwide:

1. #YouAreNotPowerless – domestic abuse campaign supported by the Home Office, Refuge, Respect, Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse (EIDA), Hestia and Neighbourhood Watch

Two women are killed each week by a current or former partner, and it is estimated that a typical victim of domestic abuse endures up to 35 assaults before speaking up.

To raise awareness of this crime type, in September 2020 Crimestoppers launched a six-week social media campaign with the support of the Home Office, Refuge, Respect, Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse (EIDA), Hestia and Neighbourhood Watch.

Shifting our focus every two weeks to target different audiences, the campaign aimed to educate the general public and employers about the signs to spot of domestic abuse, and to promote self-reflection amongst our digital audiences who may have had concerns about their behaviour.

As well as social media messaging and printable materials, the campaign also featured guest blog posts from relevant voices, including Director of Operations at Refuge Jane Keeper, Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales Nicole Jacobs, Head of UK SAYS NO MORE at Hestia Lyndsey Dearlove and CEO of EIDA Lorraine O’Brien.

The first week of the campaign saw a 29.5% increase in reports received, with social media content garnering 4,894,385 impressions throughout the duration of the campaign.

2. Say No to People Smuggling – Organised Immigration Crime campaign in partnership with the UK Government

In response to Operation Melrose, which sought justice for the 39 migrants found dead in the back of a refrigerated lorry in 2019, Crimestoppers launched an Organised Immigration Crime campaign in partnership with the UK Government and the National Crime Agency (NCA). Following a successful pilot in Essex, the campaign was rolled out nationally for 10 weeks commencing in February 2021.

The campaign aimed to educate the general public around ports and service stations about the signs to spot of people smuggling, and to raise awareness of our anonymous reporting service amongst haulage drivers. We collaborated with the Home Office, NCA, Essex Police and refrigerated lorry working group to produce communications materials, with campaign leaflets being translated into 17 languages to amplify the reach of our message.

3. #SlaveryonYourDoorstep – Modern Slavery campaign supported by the GLAA, Anti-Slavery Commissioner and Salvation Army

After the number of potential victims of trafficking, slavery and forced labour identified in the UK hit a record high of 10,000 in 2019, Crimestoppers launched a national modern slavery campaign, #SlaveryonYourDoorstep, in June 2020, supported by the Gangmasters & Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), Anti-Slavery Commissioner and Salvation Army.

Lasting four weeks, the campaign aimed to raise awareness of the signs to spot of vulnerable people being exploited, trapped and tricked into modern slavery by criminal gangs, with the general public being encouraged to report their suspicions to Crimestoppers 100% anonymously, and victims being signposted to specialist agencies.

Campaign assets highlighted sectors particularly relevant to modern slavery, including contract cleaning, agriculture, nail bars, hand car wash facilities and factories, with social media and print artwork being translated into Albanian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian and Welsh to amplify the reach of our message.

The campaign reached close to 2.5 million people – engaging 42,000 of them – and resulted in a 21.9% increase in reports relating to modern slavery during the campaign period.
