Raid on parade of shops shows scale of fake goods problem

As the clock ticks towards Christmas Day and the holidays, many of us will be struggling to find the perfect gift and last-minute bargains for friends and family.

The temptation to cut corners and costs leads many to falling for fake products – cosmetics, toys, clothes and electronics. The price might seem perfect, but the counterfeits are known to risk causing harm to people and property.

Today, the City of London Police – the lead force for tackling fraud – has announced that raids on shops in just one area of Camden, North London, unearthed around £1 million worth of counterfeit goods.

Around 4,000 knock-off items were recovered, including fake football shirts, designer bracelets, and dodgy trainers.

The action by City of London Police was supported by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), Camden Council’s Trading Standards, the Anti-Counterfeiting Group and Lighthouse Security.

Crimestoppers works with a huge number of organisations which are focused on fraud – be it online or in person.

Our charity – whilst not directly involved in police operations, as we are not law enforcement – is here to pass on what you know about those involved in putting people’s lives at risk through poor quality, fake products.

Remember: if you know who is involved in producing and selling knock-off goods, you can tell Crimestoppers what you know. You’ll stay completely anonymous.
