Shop workers
Abuse against retail workers in Scotland
According to the British Retail Consortium, there are over 424 incidents of abuse/violence against shop workers in the UK every single day.
There can be lots of different reasons for this – shoplifters being caught, rules being implemented by shops to keep everyone safe, or shop workers asking customers for ID when they try to purchase age restricted items like alcohol or cigarettes.

How can I prove my age?
Acceptable forms of ID to prove your age include: passport, photo driving licence and/or proof of age card, such as the PASS card from the national Proof of Age Standards Scheme.
The Young Scot National Entitlement Card is available for free to everyone aged 11 -25 living in Scotland, and is part of the accredited national proof of age card scheme ‘PASS’.
Protection of Workers Act 2021
It is an offence to assault or behave in a threatening or abusive way towards a retail worker.
Assaulting, threatening or being abusive to a retail worker for enforcing age restriction laws e.g. IDing someone trying to buy alcohol, is an aggravated charge - that means a person convicted may get a tougher penalty.
