Street Safety
Out late with mates?
Playing footy with friends?
Walking home alone?
Whatever you’re up to, follow our top tips to help keep you and your friends safe:
- Even if you don’t feel it, or you’re in a new area and a little lost, try and use confident body language – head up, shoulders back. If you need to check your route or make a call, pop into a shop if you can, rather than using your phone on the street. Staff in the shop will likely be happy to give you directions or help you any way they can, too.
- If you’re listening to music, keep it at a volume that still allows you to hear who, and what is going on around you. Be aware of your surroundings.
- Tell a friend, family member or someone you live with where you are going, who you are meeting and what time you expect to be home. Update them if your plans change. You could also share your live location with them on WhatsApp and agree a code word that you can send them if you’re in trouble or need help.
- If possible, travel to/from where you’re going with friends. It’ll make the journey more fun, and you can look out for each other. If you’re travelling home separately, you could send a text later on to check in and make sure you all got home safe.
- If you’re out after dark, stick to well-lit and busy areas and if available, use public transport or arrange a lift rather than walking home.
- Keep your cash, cards and valuables hidden in your bag or pocket. Having them out on display can make you a more likely target for thieves.
- Have fun but remember to be respectful of people around you, so that everyone feels safe.
