Q&A with Freya Johns, Fearless Outreach Worker – Kent

About Freya
As Fearless Outreach Worker in Kent, Freya will be using her experience of volunteering with the Scouts to build trust and confidence in young people, through interactive and engaging workshops. Freya will be raising awareness of our 100% anonymous reporting service and encouraging young people to speak up about crime, to help keep themselves, their friends and where they live safe.
We sat down for a chat with Freya to find out more about her experience and what she hopes to achieve in her new role.
Tell us a bit about your work background
I’ve volunteered with young people over the last 7 years and developed a great passion for empowering them to use their voice. I’ve recently graduated with a degree in politics and international relations and wanted to be able to have a career based in action.
I love to focus on increased engagement with young people and including them in shaping things for themselves. It’s really important to have honest conversations to build trust as part of prevention work.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
You can only grow outside of your comfort zone.
What are you most looking forward to in your role with Fearless?
The thing I’m most looking forward to is engaging with young people and being able to empower them to shape their communities and have a positive impact.
We encourage young people to be fearless in speaking up about crime – what does ‘fearless’ mean to you?
It’s about being brave and having the courage to put the safety of your community above your own comfort in the moment – speaking up despite the fear.
What would you say to a young person who has information about a crime but isn’t sure who to talk to?
There are lots of options open to young people, and I’d always encourage them to find a trusted adult whenever they’re unsure. If you feel you can’t take this route, then Fearless is always here to help.
Who or what is inspiring you right now?
The number of young people that Fearless reaches is definitely inspiring – it shows the power of a small, passionate team.
