Healthy relationships: spot the flags

We've teamed up with Hammersmith & Fulham to help young people know the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. From friendships to family and romantic relationships, young people from the area have told us their experiences and shared their top tips.

Healthy relationships feel safe

They’re built on trust, respect, and kindness.

Whether it’s with a partner, a friend, or family, green flags look like:

✅ Listening and understanding

✅ Respecting boundaries

✅ Supporting each other

If someone lifts you up, values your feelings, and makes you feel free to be yourself…

That’s a green flag.

❌ Trying to control who you speak to or hang out with

❌ Checking your phone or invading your privacy

❌ Making you feel bad about yourself

If someone puts you down, does not respect your feelings, and makes you feel you need to change…

That’s a red flag.

Why it matters

Knowing what’s healthy helps you spot what’s not.

Unhealthy relationships are a form of violence and abuse. They can feel confusing, controlling, unsafe, and disrespectful.  If it doesn't feel right then it probably isn't. Support is available, you can contact services for advice and support. You are not alone.

Hammersmith & Fulham's Youth Council spoke to more than 3,000 young people who told them that safety is one of the key things they care about, and they want to learn more.

Created with young people, for young people

This campaign was developed with Hammersmith & Fulham's Youth Council, who helped shape the content to make it relatable and relevant for young people locally.

What young people can report to Fearless

If you’re seeing red flags instead of green ones, you can tell Fearless, the dedicated youth service of Crimestoppers.

Fearless provides young people with the opportunity to give information about crime 100% anonymously – no one will ever know you gave us information

So if you have information, or are concerned about behaviours that go beyond unhealthy and are abusive, you can speak up and tell us by filling out our simple online form, right here on our website

Give information anonymously

We understand that there are many reasons why young people may not want to give information about a crime – we know it can be a difficult decision.

We often hear about young people not wanting to be called a grass or a snitch.

It’s important to change the narrative of crime reporting among young people. They’re not being a snitch; they are helping make their community, friends and family safe.

They are creating a safer place for everyone to live.
