Sextortion in Rural Scotland

Sextortion in Rural Scotland

By Rory Anderson, Child Sexual Exploitation Advisor, RISE Highland

Sextortion, a form of online blackmail that involves threats to release private sexual images unless the victim complies with demands for money or more explicit content, is increasingly affecting rural communities in the north of Scotland. Although often viewed as an urban issue, the unique circumstances in these areas can amplify its impact.

In close-knit rural communities, the fear of judgment can silence victims. Many victims worry about how coming forward might affect their reputation and relationships, leading to isolation. This stigma makes it crucial to create supportive environments where individuals feel safe discussing their experiences. Access to mental health resources is often limited in these regions.

For those affected by sextortion, finding professional help can be challenging. This is where organisations like RISE Highland which stands for Reducing the Impact of child Sexual Exploitation play a vital role. RISE Highland offers crucial support at risk individuals and victims of sexual exploitation. They provide a safe space for victims to share their experiences, receive support, and access resources tailored to their needs. By fostering open conversations and offering empathetic guidance, RISE Highland helps break the cycle of silence that can accompany these crimes.

The rise of social media also presents challenges, particularly for children and young people who may not fully grasp the risks of sharing personal images. With limited face-to-face interactions, these individuals can be more susceptible to online manipulation. RISE Highland aims to educate communities about these dangers, empowering individuals with the knowledge to protect themselves and others.

In addition to providing direct support, RISE Highland collaborates with local schools and organisations to raise awareness about sextortion and its consequences. Through workshops and outreach programs, they promote understanding around consent and the importance of safe online practices, creating a more informed community.

Strengthening ties between community leaders, Police Scotland, and organisations like RISE Highland is essential for an effective response to sextortion. Training public and third sector organisations to handle these sensitive cases can ensure victims feel heard and supported when they report incidents.

Sextortion is a pressing issue in rural Scotland, but, with the right support, we can make a difference.

RISE Highland works with partner to create safer environments, empower victims, and foster open dialogue about these critical issues.

RISE Highland is a dedicated team operating within a partnership that includes Barnardo’s, Police Scotland, The Highland Child Protection Committee, and The Highland Council. Focused on supporting young people who are at risk of or victims of child sexual exploitation, RISE Highland provides essential advice and guidance to parents, carers and professionals.

Our work includes facilitating training sessions to help identify exploitation, respond to concerns, and promote healthy relationships among young people. By collaborating closely with Police Scotland, we actively identify and disrupt perpetrators of exploitation, ensuring a safer environment for children.

Through our commitment to education and support, RISE Highland aims to empower communities to protect young people and reduce the impact of sexual exploitation in our region.
