Whistleblowing in the NHS, health and social care sector can save lives

Importance of whistleblowing

Lives can be saved by normalising whistleblowing in the workplace

Speaking up about workplace wrongdoing or criminal behaviour can be difficult and takes courage.

As we’ve seen in recent months and years, when the whistleblowing process is either inadequate or not trusted within an organisation, people come to harm.* This can include babies and vulnerable people in care settings.**

Addressing the culture change that’s needed is the biggest hurdle facing employers across all sectors. Whistleblowing needs to be normalised.

Ensuring that whistleblowers are listened to and their information investigated and acted upon is essential to avoid abuse and corruption. It benefits everyone, from patients and those being cared for, to staff and contractors.

It’s important that whilst pushing for change and urgent improvements to shore up and embed whistleblowing, we also acknowledge the contribution made by people who step forward to challenge harmful behaviour that might otherwise go unchecked.

At Crimestoppers, we run a range of whistleblowing lines across many sectors and industries for companies who are keen to stop wrongdoing and protect staff and customers alike.
