Guernsey Crimestoppers is launching a brand-new round-island kayak challenge.

The challenge is to circumnavigate Guernsey inside 8 hours, 55 minutes and 11 seconds - that time being based on our famous anonymous telephone number, 0800 555 111.

The event is scheduled for September 15, with provisional reserve dates also being set in case of adverse weather conditions.

A similar event took place back in 2011, co-ordinated in conjunction with Outdoor Guernsey, as this year's challenge will be. With the right preparation and commitment, this challenge is achievable and will be carried out under the strict guidance and supervision of qualified instructors.

Mike Smith, a member of the local Crimestoppers board, who participated in the event four years ago, said:

“You can travel around Guernsey by car, bus, cycle and foot - so why not by kayak? It is the increasingly popular, and environmentally friendly way to see Guernsey’s fantastic coastline, " said

“In 2011, under the guidance and instruction of Outdoor Guernsey, all participants successfully completed the challenge - but it wasn't all plain sailing. Our first two attempts were postponed due to unsafe weather conditions. However, it was third time lucky when we set off in a calm sea, although we did have to contend with some thick fog along the west coast.”

Applications for this latest Crimestoppers Challenge are invited from islanders with some kayaking experience, with access to a suitable kayak and who are willing to raise money for charity. Funds raised will be shared between Crimestoppers, Safer Guernsey and CI Air Search - or, alternatively, participants may raise funds for a specific charity of their choice.

An advance entry fee of £75 will apply, which will include initial training, rescue exercises, assessment, supervision and a souvenir to mark a successful achievement.

Entrants must be at least 18 years old, and only a limited number of places are available.
