Although there is no typical victim of child sexual exploitation, there is evidence to suggest the following are typical vulnerabilities in children prior to abuse:

  • Living in a chaotic or dysfunctional household
  • History of abuse or neglect
  • Recent bereavement or loss
  • Gang association
  • Learning disabilities
  • Confused about their sexuality
  • Friends with young people who are sexually exploited
  • Homeless or living in residential care, hostel, B&B or foyer
  • Lacking friends from the same age group
  • Living in residential care
  • Low self-esteem or self-confidence
  • Young carer
