Spotlight on how to protect lone workers

Spotlight on lone worker safety

Protecting workers from violence and intimidation is crucial to ensuring staff stay safe, valued, and protected.

This is especially true of those who work alone as they are more vulnerable.

David Crawley, Director of Business, Growth & Fundraising at Crimestoppers, this week attended The Health & Safety Event at the NEC in Birmingham, the UK’s largest showcase of what’s available to improve workplace safety.

David spoke at two sessions; the first about how Crimestoppers can help individuals and businesses; and the second was a panel discussion about violence against staff, which explored why violence is on the rise and what can be done to support those on the frontline.

‘Step up and stay safe’ was the mantra. Companies must demonstrate their commitment to improving worker safety.

“All organisations with lone workers must take the issue of lone worker safety seriously. They have a responsibility to look after their staff by having the right measures that actively demonstrate and reassure lone workers.

“Our charity’s team of Fearless youth outreach workers and our regional managers, benefit from having the protection of Peoplesafe devices. We also have protocols that mean managers check in with staff to ensure they are home safely after hours. Crimestoppers’ partnership with Peoplesafe is another example of good practice.”

He also cited the #ShopKind campaign to raise awareness about where shopworkers can access support, and Crimestoppers recent work with VivaStreet where a pragmatic approach has helped protect sex workers and users of the online site.
